Album notes
1994's DEFEND IT is one of Beenie Man's most uncompromising sets, with a more socially conscious set of toasts than usual. Most of these tracks are as raw and blunt as Bob Marley's '70s reggae classics, from the period when the reggae icon almost single-handedly turned the music into an instrument of protest as well as a good time. From the album's militant title on down, DEFEND IT is a similarly direct release, with songs like "Wicked Man," "No Matter Di Money" and "Bomb and Dynamite" casting a moral eye on contemporary society. Even more direct tracks like "People Dead" and "Child Abuse" are almost hectoring, with "God Mek Everything" and "I Am a Disciple" showing where Beenie Man is coming from. In a decade where reggae was nearly as violent and deadpan as gangsta rap, the sharp cuts of DEFEND IT are stunningly refreshing.
