Album notes
Personnel: Dennis Brown (vocals); Winston Bowen (guitar); Dean Fraser (saxophone, background vocals); Ronald "Nambo" Robinson (horns); Franklyn "Bubber" Waul (keyboards, synthesizer); Lloyd Parkes (bass, background vocals); Michael "Boo" Richards (drums); Desmond Young (percussion, background vocals). Recorded live at Brixton Academy, London, England in October 1985. Includes liner notes by John Williams.Digitally remastered by Patrick Byrd. This fall 1985 date at the Brixton Academy of Music in Southeast London is a perfect example of why Dennis Brown deserved the lofty accolades he got throughout his career. Not only did he have an extensive catalog of quality tunes; he knew which tunes worked best live and delivered them in fine style. During this especially strong set, Brown starts with "Here I Come," and ends with "How Can I Leave," packing other standbys like "Whip Them Jah," "The Promised Land," and "Silhouettes" in between. Brown was one singer that sounded as good on stage as he did in the studio--if the pure roots power of "The Prophets Rides Again" doesn't hit you in the chest (especially when played back-to-back with "The Promised Land"), your pulse needs checking. While unreleased on a major US or Jamaican label, there's no doubt that ACADEMY is one live disc that Brown collectors will want to hunt down.
